On Leaving Facebook

"When you ride the Big Blue Bus for free, you have to sit down, shut up and enjoy the view."  I'm gonna sit up front so I can see where I'm going and I'm not sharing lunch  (or photographs) with the driver.

Probably going to stick my neck out, but I'm posting some links that may have prompted this decision.

I have let my guard down in the name of entertainment and sharing. I'm sorry, but the negatives outweigh the positives. Now that my friends know where to find me, I don't think I need FB anymore. I knew this going in and was hesitant at first. Now, I'm almost addicted. I have thoroughly enjoyed the trip, but I need to get out before they completely own me.
This is just ONE of many articles addressing it. More links have been added.

Subject: Facebook is Watching You

10 Reasons Why You Should Never Trust Facebook Facebook is like a force of nature. No matter how much you batten down the hatches, stock up on canned foods, cross your fingers, or come out guns blazing with an army of high priced lawyers, the monster of all media platforms is going to eat you and your privacy alive then fart out Farmville or some garbage. But just as you can have a gentle rain one day and a hurricane the next, the sheer size of Facebook can lead to “social networking” problems you hadn’t anticipated or want to experience. Here are 10 reasons why you should never trust Facebook.
Their Reputation Don’t be naive and think that nothing bad could happen just because many people haven’t had any problems with Facebook. Besides, people who have had problems might not share their experiences because they are embarrassed.
Their Privacy Policy Facebook has the right to change their privacy policies as they think best. So what you think you’ve agreed to at one time may change in the future.
Their (Lack of / Ambiguous) Updates Don’t expect to be informed about the latest scams and other online threats immediately. A behemoth like Facebook takes time to do things.
Their Buyers In The Marketplace Fraud is rampant and a check that seems good may turn out to be fraudulent.
Adjusting Your Account The procedure to make changes to your account is confusing at best, and difficult to the point where you may end up foregoing it altogether.
Their Pictures No one is going to put an unflattering picture of themselves on their Facebook page. And it might not even be a picture of themselves that you see.
Friends of a Friend It’s too easy for someone to appear to be a friend of one of your friends. Accepting him or her might seem the polite thing to do, but there could be unexpected consequences. Friends Being friended may seem like a special privilege but it is not. You can be fooled into having a “friend” who has ulterior motives that are not in your best interest.
Relationship Status A relationship is all about trust. The lack of one-on-one that is inherent in Facebook disallows that from the get-go.
Yourself Things you wouldn’t say to someone in the “real” world becomes easy when a computer screen separates you. Like telling everyone that you are on vacation or saying the wrong thing because you think it’s “funny.” It could end up landing you in hot water.

- Facebook made big news this week after reports came out of a new user agreement that basically makes it possible for Facebook to turn your wall posts into a g*ddamn coffee table book (or do whatever else they want to try to make money off of your life). Well, needless to say, everyone freaked the hell out out. And after two days of protest, Facebook decided to revert back to their previous terms of service. But don’t be fooled – the battle is not over and they will do everything in their power to control your content. The only cure is to get out now, while you still can. And we have the answer: the exact link for where you need to go to permanently delete your Facebook account! This doesn’t just deactivate your account until you decide to log back in and start where you left off. This will delete all of your information – pictures, messages, everything. So only do this if never want to use your profile ever again. To delete your account, just logged-in, go to this page, click “submit” and your account is gone forever… That’s it. Viva la Resistance!

Gandhi quote on Facebook censored

Looking at the Profile Pics of over 500 of my FB friends, it's really going to be tough unfriending them or closing my page. I guess I'll do it gradually by archiving my posts and photo albums.

Getting tired. Gonna wrap this up for the night. After I change my profile. Might have to wait til tomorrow to deactivate. Wanna save some 4,780 pics first. Just some of the info. Going to have to put these in my blog so I won't lose them. My email address is VA Myth Buster@aol.com. Been doing this (Busting Myths) since I've had a computer. It's been fun, but now it's out of control. Cheers.
